From the outside of the blinds to the outer edge of the cars there was a space about 24 inches wide. There was a ladder running up to the top of the car in this space and the bums would grap hold of the ladder and hold on to it. That was riding the blinds. See More Bounty Hunter Finds Here a picture of my daughter, this was her first time ever using a metal detector outside. We had practiced in the house a few times, she was using the Tracker IV. We found what would be invaluable to anyone but they sure we valuable to us. When I took it out of the box and put it together I went out for the first time at one of our local fairgrounds and found a unique sterling silver heart shaped pendant 8-inches underground.
What followed next was an early vintage 2″x 2″ ‘s piece of newspaper press plate inches underground. My next find was very exciting to me.
The oldest known Date Nail used in the U.S. is a “97” () and was used on the Mississippi River & Bonne Terre Railroad. It wasn’t until that major railroads, such as The Great Northern Railway, began using nails to date crossties.
Depending on information provided by the piece itself, you may be able to come within a few years of dating it or may have to settle for a span of 50 years or longer. A wide variety of resources can help you come close to dating an antique roll-top desk. Perfectly symmetrical measurements are a clue that your desk was factory- rather than hand-made. Early roll-tops were built of heavy woods such as black walnut, and small local companies might choose from a variety of local hardwoods.
Most popular toward the end of the 19th century, close-grained oak was often quarter-sawn, or cut to promote a particularly even grain, reducing the possibility of warping and increasing durability. Mahogany, teak and cherry also appear in old desks, but from on, most desks were oak. A desk made from cherry after , for example, would have been a special order or the work of a local craftsman.
You may want to seek advice from an expert carpenter or cabinet-maker to identify the wood, especially if it has been stained or varnished to modify the color.

I’m not sure how you nailed yours, but it’s not been a bad idea based on my experience. There are likely different ways to nail cork – I nailed mine using Atlas track nails about every 2 inches on each half. It worked very well on two layouts I built so far – one was a 16×19′ garage layout subject to major swings in humidiy and temperature Bloomington Indiana and the other was a 14×25′ in a basement environment.
I recommend it over gluing. The Garage layout was by far the worst environment, and while my flex track did experience some expansion and contraction issues due to the swings, the cork was largely just fine. The way I adapted to the expansion and contraction with the track was to not solder all of the joints and to leave a slight gap, so the rails could expand and contract and “float” a bit.

Don’t worry — your e-mail address is totally secure. I promise to use it only to send you Clock Collecting Tips. There are so many styles and types of clocks, made by so many clock makers and from so many countries, that I was totally lost. Over many years, I have learned a lot. I have concentrated on the American clock companies for my collection, so there is much for me to learn about clocks from outside the US.
The question I get most from the comment form on this web site is: Some people will see a clock at an antique store that would look good in a certain room of their house, and end up with it that way. However you might end up with your special clock, you probably would like to identify, date and generally learn more about it. This clock forum page may be able to help.
You can post your clock here for other visitors to see. If these visitors have knowledge of your clock, they can post comments about it here. Also, if I know anything about your clock, I will also post a comment for you. There are many ways to identify and date an antique clock. Entire books have been written on the subject.

This particular engine would later have a fatal encounter with the Baldwin trestle on the Tillamook branch. It would fall a hundred feet or so through the trestle to its demise and the death of the crew.
Feb 26, · WHAT IS A DATE NAIL? Briefly, a date nail is a nail with the date stamped in its head. For example, a nail with a “12” is from They are usually 2 1/2″ long, with 1/4″ shanks. Date nails were driven into railroad ties, bridge timbers, utility poles, mine props and other wooden structures for record keeping purposes. Wiley, it would be
Green on a dowel, which was used for signalling. Fusees were usually ‘stored’ in a specific locker in Caboose, usually in factory cardboard case of Fifty? Often coal oil cans with spouts for filling markers and lamps were thrown in there, as well. The markers, when not on outside bracket on corners of Caboose, Green to sides and ahead, Red to rear normally. The Caboose was often in darkness at night, if Conductor was finished his paperwork, to improve night visibility looking ahead for sparks in train.

Rather, the railway was built after the major settlement of the Midwest, as a means of marketing the region’s fast increasing productivity. But the building of the Kansas City Southern did result in many new cities and towns, including Port Arthur, Texas , now one of the nation’s largest ports. The railway also tapped important resources in the six MidwesternSouthwestern States through which it originally passed Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Texas.
This area provides much of the world’s petroleum, chemicals, major shares of America’s zinc, lead and bauxite, together with an extensive production of coal, natural gas, timber, livestock and grain. He acquired a flair for railroading from his grandfather, Hamblin Stilwell, who had been one of the founders of the New York Central Railroad, as well as a builder of the Erie Canal.
The boy’s imagination was captured by conversations between his grandfather and Commodore Vanderbilt, and when the Commodore asked him what he intended to do as a man, he replied, “I’m going West to build a railroad!

It is obvious from this proportionality that the lower the frequency, the lower the VDI number if other variables remain unchanged. This relation can be observed when the operating frequency is changed during both an Air Test and actual metal detecting. After Air Testing Bench Testing other coins of different sizes and conductivities, I noticed almost the same difference between any coin’s VDI values obtained at 18 kHz and 4 kHz frequencies – near 20 points.
If you set a second tonal zone ranging from 10 to 30 for low-conductive non-ferrous junk targets and assign a low “iron” tone Hz to it, the ring with a “newly attained” VDI value of 29 will be most likely ignored by you because an audio response to the ring will sound “iron”. Of course, this is an extreme example because only an unwise enthusiast would use the 4 kHz frequency for detecting the low-conductive gold rings and small silver coins. However, the example describes exactly what may happen in reality: The worst situation may occur when the Multi-Notch mode of Conventional Discrimination is utilized.
For instance, if one switches from the 18 kHz to the 12 kHz frequency to increase the Detection Depth Range increase of up to 2 inches is possible for certain coins or other targets with similar properties , some coins with VDI values near the notch threshold s may end up within the adjacent rejecting notch es , and the detector’s audio responses to them would be muted.
Just like in the above-described case, desirable coins with VDI’s occupying the Threshold-adjoining area may turn up in the lower conductivity zone and, therefore, “sound off” like the unwanted targets when the frequency is changed form 18 kHz to 12 kHz. This change may be quite counterproductive, and this example could probably be another good argument in favor of using the 2-Tone mode of Discrimination. However, here comes my note!
This beach served as the only access to the area, which was then known as Garibaldi Beaches. The area remained nearly isolated to all but a few hearty souls who would drive up the beach by horse and wagon or walk during low tide. Date nails were manufactured by steel companies on high speed machines, even in the early years. If a railroad wanted to use date nails, they would order the kind of nails they wanted (for instance, a 2 1/2″ x 3/16″ steel nail, round with raised numerals “34”).
Clues to a Building’s History Thomas D. Visser Hand-wrought nail, before circa Type A cut nail, circa s s Type B cut nail, circa s s Wire nail, circa s to present Nails provide one of the best clues to help determine the age of historic buildings, especially those constructed during the nineteenth century, when nail-making technology advanced rapidly. Until the last decade of the s and the early s, hand-wrought nails typically fastened the sheathing and roof boards on building frames.
These nails were made one by one by a blacksmith or nailor from square iron rod. After heating the rod in a forge, the nailor would hammer all four sides of the softened end to form a point. The pointed nail rod was reheated and cut off.
