hi I currently went for an early scan on the 2nd Feb and got told I was 6 weeks 4 days.. I then went for another scan on the 22nd Feb and got told I was 9 weeks 1 day.
I went to my first appointment believing I am 10 weeks by my last period. After the ultrasound, they told me I am 7 weeks 0 days. I don’t know what to believe because my periods were out of wack. I will see what happens at my next appointment in a few days. And in the meantime, this is very stressful, wish we would not scan until weeks to be really certain, science vs nature Now I am feeling like is it a miscarriage about to happen? From experience I believe both pregnancies of mine were dated wrong during the ultrasound.

Of all of these uses, dating the pregnancy is the most common reason to use ultrasound, particularly when the expectant mother cannot remember the date of her last period as in breast-feeding or irregular cycles.
When an ultrasound is performed, measurements of the head, abdomen, thigh, and amount of amniotic fluid are done. This creates error in that the baby will compute out to be further along than he or she really is. For instance, say you normally have eight and nine pound babies. Then your baby at 37 weeks will have bigger measurements than babies destined to weigh seven or eight pounds at birth.
How accurate are early dating scans ?
Since every woman ovulates at different times, your conception dates will all be different. I for example am 32 days. That throws things off as well you could see how this would cause your true due date to differ. But there is really no SURE way to determine the exact date of conception, SO they go from the last date of your period. And all babies develop at an average pace, but some are a little more ready, or less ready toward the end of pregnancy.
A dating scan is one that is performed in order to establish the gestational age of the pregnancy, and also reveal important information such as; the presence of a heart beat, the number of fetuses and gestation sacs as well as any unusual features.

DIY alternatives to induction If you are desperate to see your baby, or are finding it hard to decline offers of hospital induction, then you may be considering ways to bring on labour yourself. There are plenty of links and suggestions on the UK Midwifery archives page on complementary therapies. It might be worth thinking through exactly you do not want induction in hospital.
If you would not accept medical treatment to bring on labour, what is different about using complementary therapies? Fine, if your intention is just to avoid hospital – but if you are concerned about interfering with your body’s ability to give birth, then DIY methods might not be right for you.
Dec 21, · week pregnancy dating scan. All pregnant women in England are offered an ultrasound scan at around 8 to 14 weeks of pregnancy. This is called the dating scan. It’s used to see how far along in your pregnancy you are and check your baby’s development.

My background- 18 months ago I had a c-section delivering my son. I also have a retroverted uterus per my doc. I had IVF in early February, two 3 day embryos were transferred, which resulted in several positive pregnancy tests home and lab. At five weeks we saw two gestational sacs. At 6w4d, we saw one empty sac and one fetal pole with a heartbeat of So it appears one twin developed and the other possibly became a BO or hadn’t developed yet.
Can an ultrasound be wrong about your due date?
Sorry, something has gone wrong. Your pregnancy will still be counted as 40 weeks so they will take the date of conception and add two weeks to it. Even women who know their lmp, when they ovulated and conceived and the scan backs all this up are still likely to give birth outside of their due date. The scan is supposed to be accurate to within a few days which somehow by the end of pregnancy has grown to an entire month!
Jul 01, · I had my dating scan today. According to the scan the baby is weeks. This places the start of the pregnancy a week before the start of a very normal period. I have charted my period, sex and symptoms for a while and things have nearly always run as clockpoint to the point I .
Above graphic from Mutha Crafter. Visit her shop here. We have it ingrained in our heads throughout our entire adult lives-pregnancy is 40 weeks. The “due date” we are given at that first prenatal visit is based upon that 40 weeks, and we look forward to it with great anticipation. When we are still pregnant after that magical date, we call ourselves “overdue” and the days seem to drag on like years.
The problem with this belief about the 40 week EDD is that it is not based in fact. It is one of many pregnancy and childbirth myths which has wormed its way into the standard of practice over the years-something that is still believed because “that’s the way it’s always been done”. This theory was originated by Harmanni Boerhaave, a botanist who in came up with a method of calculating the EDD based upon evidence in the Bible that human gestation lasts approximately 10 lunar months.
The formula was publicized around by German obstetrician Franz Naegele and since has become the accepted norm for calculating the due date. There is one glaring flaw in Naegele’s rule. Strictly speaking, a lunar or synodic – from new moon to new moon month is actually Variants in cycle length Aside from the gross miscalculation of the lunar due date, there is another common problem associated with formulating a woman’s EDD: Not all women have a 28 day cycle; some are longer, some are shorter, and even those with a 28 day cycle do not always ovulate right on day If a woman has a cycle which is significantly longer than 28 days and the baby is forced out too soon because her due date is calculated according to her LMP last menstrual period , this can result in a premature baby with potential health problems at birth.
Q&A: I want to know if I should trust the accuracy on an ultrasound to date a pregnancy.
Your period dates are also as good as an estimate can be. Truth is YOUR body and your baby will decide when that delivery date is!!! Just keep those two dates marked
Dec 15, · Our dating scan was more a reassurance scan due to m/c earlier this year. We thought that we were 6w4d and it turned out we were 10w 4d that was a surprise and a very welcomed relief.
Add message Report nosexpleaseimpregnant Wed Aug The conception calculator will tell you weeks but your doctor would make that weeks going by LMP. The clearblue test goes on the level of hcg roughly in your urine and also depends on what time of day you’ve done the tests. First wee in the morning will have a higher level of hcg due to the high concentration of the wee. Conception is a minefield because sperm stays alive in your body for up to 7 days and it could take an extra 2 days post ovulation to fertilise the egg!!
I am making myself miserable which I suppose might be a symptom in itself! But there is nothing I can do about it except drive myself up the wall! It’s a lonely business this first 12 weeks when I only have DH to obsess at poor chap! Congratulations on your pregnancy. Add message Report Baby2b Wed Aug It tends to get less accurate the further on you are as too many hormones can make it have strange readings.
LMP vs Ovulation when dating due date.
However, the quad screen looks for not only the three specific substances evaluated in those tests AFP, hCG, and Estriol but also a fourth substance known as Inhibin-A. The screen is essentially the same as the screening tests that look for only three substances, except the likelihood of identifying pregnancies at risk for Down Syndrome is higher through the evaluation of Inhibin-A levels. The false positive rate of the test is also lower. What is a screening test?
I definitely think dating scans can be wrong. With my first I knew exactly when he’d been conceived you don’t forget one shag in four months! but scan put me forward by 4 days. My waters broke 4 days after supposed due date, though was still induced due to nothing happening fast enough.
Antenatal tests can be done to detect genetic or chromosomal abnormalities. There are two types of tests: Diagnostic tests are ultrasound scan, nuchal scan, AFP test, maternal serum triple test, Chorionic Villus sampling and amniocentesis. Antenatal testing has become available at several centres. It is important to realise that any antenatal test can lead to a confrontation with an unexpected abnormal result. This may lead to difficult decisions regarding the option of pregnancy termination, a decision some parents may feel they do not want to face.
Thus, for many women, the decision to have the tests is a difficult one because of the serious implications of the information provided. Many families are not always sure that having the tests is the right decision for them as they may be bound by moral, ethical or religious issues. For this reason no antenatal tests should be performed without in-depth discussion with, and informed consent from the parents. In general, women with a family history of genetic abnormalities are encouraged to obtain genetic counselling about potential antenatal tests available.
Whether antenatal tests are being done during pregnancy for reassurance of the parents or to prepare them or to offer choices in case an abnormality is detected, it is always useful to know what the various tests offer and what their limitations are before giving consent. Antenatal tests can be divided into two categories:
This is generally the earliest that anything is visible on an ultrasound, although at this point it will not look much like a baby, since development is still in the early stages. Video of the Day Ultrasound Type At this early in a pregnancy, it is difficult to see anything at all using a standard external ultrasound machine. Often, if a six-week sonogram is performed at all, it will be using a vaginal ultrasound machine, which consists of a wand-shaped device that is inserted into the vagina.
Location A six-week ultrasound can determine the location of the embryo and ascertain that it is in the correct place in the uterus. If the pregnancy is an ectopic pregnancy, with the embryo implanted outside the uterus in the Fallopian tube, this can be determined based on the blood flow patterns seen via ultrasound. Heartbeat The fetal heartbeat is often detectable at a six-week ultrasound.
Jul 24, · oh ive not heard that before. when i was pg with dd had an early scan and was told 9 weeks then and wasnt offered a dating scan after that??? when i had my 20 week scan i was measuring days further but kept it at same date. i had my dd at 39+6weeks. x.
A fully updated and expanded version is published in Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering: When I was pregnant with my first baby in , I decided against having a scan. What influenced me the most was my feeling that I would lose something important as a mother if I allowed someone to test my baby. I knew that if a minor or uncertain problem showed up — and this is not uncommon — that I would be obliged to return again and again, and that after a while, it would feel as if my baby belonged to the system, and not to me.
In the years since then I have had three more unscanned babies, and have read many articles and research papers about ultrasound. Nothing I have read has made me reconsider my decision. Ultrasound Past and Present Ultrasound was developed during WWII to detect enemy submarines, and was subsequently used in the steel industry. In July Glasgow surgeon Ian Donald borrowed an industrial machine and, using beefsteaks as controls, began to experiment with abdominal tumours that he had removed from his patients.
Here in Australia, it is estimated that 99 percent of babies are scanned at least once in pregnancy — mostly as a routine prenatal ultrasound RPU at 4 to 5 months. In the US, where this cost is borne by the insurer or privately, around 70 percent of pregnant women have a scan. In , UK radiologist H. Meire, who had been performing pregnancy scans for 20 years, commented, The casual observer might be forgiven for wondering why the medical profession is now involved in the wholesale examination of pregnant patients with machines emanating vastly different powers of energy which is not proven to be harmless to obtain information which is not proven to be of any clinical value by operators who are not certified as competent to perform the operations.
Recommendations were also made to develop guidelines for the safe use of all obstetric ultrasound, as well as for the development of standards for the training of ultrasonographers see below. So far, none of these recommendations have been implemented.
